Michelle Obama's Brutally Honest Marriage Advice: "Prepare Yourself For" Discomfort

Posted On: January 09, 2023

As depicted by Michelle Obama’s brutal honesty, marriage is work and not always 50/50.  It's more of a pendulum that changes from time to time; one giving more at one point and one giving less at another point, but the bottom line, as she depicts, is that you have must be prepared to be truly uncomfortable and recognize that a marriage is difficult work and there will be times where there will be arguments.  It's how you handle those arguments and move forward that matters...and compromise plays a big role.  This article also poses some important questions for a couple to consider.

What’s Love Got To Do With It? Marrying For Money Might Be On The Way Back

Posted On: November 01, 2021

This article and study has revealed that people seeking a partner in life are now often looking for companionship, but it is shifting back to what was the primary criteria, and that is the economic stability/wealth of a partner.

What I found most interesting about this article was that one of the ways that they did this study was from France’s best-selling monthly magazine, which has more than 300,000 “marriage ads”; people looking for a new partner.  I guess here we would equate that to the dating apps that are available for people.

Sarah Weddington, Lawyer Who Argued Roe v. Wade, Dies At 76

Posted On: January 04, 2022

This past holiday season we lost another female icon for women’s rights, Sarah Weddington, a minister’s daughter who became a Texas lawyer, and who, at 26, successfully argued the landmark abortion rights case of Roe v. Wade before the Supreme Court, died this past Sunday at the age of 76.

She actually argued Roe v Wade before the High Court twice.  Once in December 1971 and again in October 1972, which ultimately resulted in the next year’s 7 to 2 ruling that legalized abortion nationwide.  Only a few years after graduating law school, which shows extreme bravery itself, she and her former classmate, Linda Coffee, brought a class action lawsuit on behalf of a pregnant woman (Jane Roe), challenging a state law that largely banned abortions in Texas.  It was brought against the then Dallas County District Attorney, Henry Wade.  As we all know this case ultimately led to the Supreme Court.

Oddly enough, Weddington’s death, some 50 years later, comes as the Supreme Court is facing challenges to the historic case of Roe v Wade.  Currently the Supreme Court is considering a case over Mississippi’s ban on abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy.  This case is widely considered to be the most serious challenge in years to Roe v. Wade.

Ms. Weddington was very active in politics.   She was a state law maker in the Texas House of Representatives, before becoming general counsel of the US Department of Agriculture and later worked as an advisor on women’s issues to President Jimmy Carter.

She wrote a book on Roe v Wade and gave many lectures and taught many courses at the University of Texas at Houston as well as Texan’s Women’s University on Leadership, Law and Gender Discrimination.  She was so active she even attended the 2019 signing ceremony for a New York law meant to safeguard abortion rights, should Roe v Wade be overturned.

It is the hard and valiant work of women like Ms. Weddington who have secured and helped save women’s rights over the years.  She will be sorely missed.

Thank you, from all of us, for all the hard work.  May you rest in peace.

This Virginia School Board Just Passed An Inclusive Policy For Transgender And Gender-Expansive Students

Posted On: August 12, 2021

A Virginia school board whose heated meeting in June gained national attention has voted to expand the rights of its transgender and gender-expansive students.

The Loudoun County School Board voted Wednesday on a policy that allows transgender student athletes to play on teams based on their gender identity; allows transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms based on their gender identity; and requires teachers, faculty and staff to refer to students by their preferred names and pronouns.

Additionally, all school mental health professionals in Loudoun County Public Schools are required to undergo "training on topics relating to LGBTQ+ students, including procedures for preventing and responding to bullying, harassment and discrimination based on gender identity/expression," according to the new policy.
Failure to follow the new policy will be addressed on a case-by-case basis.

These 14 Candid Photos Show What Life Was Like In New York In The 1920s

      Posted On: September 21, 2021

I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love looking at old photos of people and places in past time periods.  I sometimes contemplate what it was like to live in that time period.  When I am at a location or historic place that has been around for centuries, I often think about what that building or geographic place may have seen over time and if these places could speak to us, what they would tell us about those who came before and how things have changed.  You can stand at a place or in a building that has seen multitudes of generations pass by.

This article has some amazing photos from the 1920s, especially some great shots of New York.  It's amazing how the world has changed and how technology has changed and sped things up - truly how life has changed.  Just look at the difference in your own lifetime and if you have children or nieces and nephews, how different their lives are from yours at their age.
