7 Big Marriage Issues Therapists Are Seeing Right Now — And The Advice They Have For Couples

Posted On: February 27, 2023

This article gives the current pulse on what therapists are hearing from couples in marriage counseling.

With all the demands of life, emotional distancing has become a problem for many.  Ironically, working from home and being together more often can actually create distancing and lack of intimacy because everyone involved is being pulled in multiple directions with multiple distractions.

However, there is a simple solution:  make time to talk on a regular basis and work out your problems together.

This may sound like a simple fix, but just spending some short regular quality time together, like eating breakfast or having a cup of coffee, can really help things improve.

People are even wondering whether they have to make time and schedule intimacy or make an appointment for sex. Please note however that there is a difference between intimacy and sex.  If things have staled, you may have to rejuvenate the intimacy between each other and know what you love about your partner before you jump start your sex life.

7 Unsexy Things All Smart Couples Do To Divorce-Proof Their Marriages

Posted On: February 21, 2023

It's extremely important, notwithstanding the “love fog” that starts when you meet somebody and fall in love, to take time to really slow down and get to know one another on a deeper level. Beginnings of relationships are happy and fun and can move exponentially fast.  The great first impression everyone gives when they are dating is not a true reflection of who they are as a person.  You really need to dig deep and find out about each other before you choose to walk down the aisle.

You want to know and see the “true character” of the person you are planning to be a significant person/partner with in your life.  Their character alone can shed light on the compatibility of a future together.

This article highlights seven other items that you should really explore and get to know about each other, your families and what you wish and dream for the future.

Tom Brady & Gisele Bündchen Lacked A Key Trait Needed To Prevent Divorce — And Not Even Retirement Could Change It

Posted On: February 14, 2023

The media is always abuzz when the name Tom Brady comes into play.  When Tom retired in 2022 and said he “needed to spend time with his family” and then shortly unretired and came back amidst rumor and speculation that also included he was having “marital difficulties” as a result of unretirement, many people looked to blame his wife Gisele as the cause of his stress and turmoil.

However, the bottom line is that a couple (whether it be in a marriage or a committed relationship) has to be on the same page with respect to commitment, what is important to each person, and shared responsibilities.

Based upon what was rumored and said in the media, it doesn’t appear that Tom and Gisele were on the same page for many years.

Everyone knows that a full-time job/career takes extreme commitment...and so does raising a family and having a good and strong relationship with your partner or spouse.

Although the public is absolutely fascinated with famous people’s divorces, no one will know the true story except the two people involved.

At the very least, however, one should recognize that they did NOT go through the court system other than to finalize their divorce.  All that was involved in unraveling their marital and pre-marital assets and liabilities was probably done by a settlement minded professional such as a mediator or collaborative Attorney.

So, if it is good for the “rich and famous” it is DEFINITELY much more economical for “the rest of us”.

If you wish to learn more about mediation or collaboration, please contact my offices.

"Getting Married Is Like Going To Hell": Why More Young Chinese Are Falling Out Of Love With Tying The Knot.

Posted On: February 06, 2023

This article speaks about the decreased numbers of marriages in China due to several reasons, including the extreme cost to get married and have a family as well as the impediments and costs to actually getting divorced. Last year China enacted a 30-day cooling-off period for divorce seekers with the aim of improving social stability.

I don’t believe this reduction is solely in China. I believe many young people are choosing not to get married for multiple reasons, among those which are cited by the Chinese.

Just because people are choosing not to get married does not mean that they have avoided all the problems that could occur when they cohabitate and share assets and liabilities. Therefore, whether it’s a prenup or a cohabitation agreement, it’s important to have an agreement which outlines ALL of the issues regarding assets and liabilities coming into the relationship.

As always, a collaborative attorney such as myself can help you with this.
