Midlife divorce is one of the fastest-growing trends in America as women 50+ rethink the second half of life.

While overall divorce numbers have declined since reaching a peak in the early 1980s, in recent years they’ve begun to soar among one demographic: people 50 and up.

The numbers are revealing. Between 1990 and 2019, “gray divorce” jumped from nearly 9% to 36%. And just this year alone, nearly 40% of divorces were among Gen X’ers. It’s even higher for Boomers. A 2021 report from the U.S. Census Bureau finds that divorce rates for people 65 and up tripled during roughly the same time period.
