Nearly Half of LGBTQ Americans Haven't Come Out at Work

Posted On: November 11, 2019

Most people are unaware that discrimination in employment is not protected unless it comes under a clearly defined class protected by law.  Employment in New York as in most states, is “at will”.  Therefore you can be fired at any time for any reason.  Although these issues have recently been argued before the Supreme Court, no decision has been made as to whether the LGBTQ community will be protected.  As this article demonstrates, many people, more than 50%, are not out in their workplace for fear that they may lose their job. Many people also experience discrimination and intolerable treatment from co-workers.

31 Photos of Vintage Celebrities on Their Wedding Day

Posted On: October 23, 2019

Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Elvis Presley, and other stars say "I do."

The public is very interested in the lives of celebrities. Here are some vintage photos of marriages. Just like main stream America, divorce is also a high reality. Is it higher for celebs? Are people more interested in the marriage or their highly publicized break ups? One thing for sure is that celebs have smartened up, and to help keep their break ups private, they are using alternative methods like collaborative divorce and “uncoupling” to resolve their divorce issues.

Marriage Advice: 10 Relationship Skills All Husbands and Wives Need to Master

Posted On: October 16, 2019

Relationship skills like any other skills need to be developed and honed overtime.

Some things that all couples can get better at is showing appreciation and validation. Showing appreciation in small but obvious ways sometimes has the biggest effect...simply being available and present to actually listen and be supportive when you partner has a problem. It's important to not give advice unless you confirm that is what your partner wants or needs. Many times they only need to be heard, not told how to handle things.

LGBTQ Monuments Around the World

Posted On: October 08, 2019

I love this article on where to find meaningful LGBTQ Monuments Around the World.

I personally know some...this is a fabulous guide!  I am also looking forward and proud that NYC has announced it will be erecting the Johnson-Rivera monument in 2021, which will stand as the world’s first permanent public artwork dedicated to transgender women.

Public memorials honoring figures from the LGBTQ community say a lot about a city’s culture.

Can Someone Be Fired for Being Gay? The Supreme Court Will Decide.

Posted On: September 30, 2019

On October 8th the Supreme Court will be hearing oral arguments on three cases that raise issues of employment discrimination and the LGBTQ community and whether their rights are protected under Title VII, which prohibits employment discrimination against race creed or sex.  The cases before the Supreme Court will determine the interpretation of the Title VII statute and whether gender expression, sexual orientation, and transgendered individuals will be part of the protected class under sex discrimination.

In almost all 50 states employment is “at Will", is the law, which means you can be fired or let go at an employer’s whim for any reason or no reason at all.  They do not have to have cause.  However, if an employer terminates an employee who falls within a protected class (such as race and sex) then such termination is illegal and is a violation of federal law.

We can only hope that the court rises to the occasion and recognizes that the LGBTQ community should be protected from discrimination.
