16 Quotes For Women’s History Month To Share With Your Kids

Posted On: March 17, 2021

Happy Women’s “Herstory” Month!  In school we were mainly taught “history”, and rarely did we hear about women leaders, let alone their quotes.

Here is a wonderful article of sixteen quotes that you can share with your children and teach them about the impact each of these women have had on herstory.  I particularly love the ones from Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Michelle Obama and Ayanna Pressley.  I will also add one of my favorites by Elenore Roosevelt, “A women is like a tea bag, you never know how strong she is until you put her in hot water”.

Couple Married For 79 Years Without Having a Quarrel Shares The Secret of Their Lasting Love

Posted On: September 12, 2022

This is an endearing story of a couple who was married for 79 years and who stated that their lasting love survived without having a single quarrel.

This article shares their secret

They believe one reason for their success is the amount of time - especially quality time - that they actually spend together...simple things like having dinner together, watching a movie regularly and making sure they kiss each other goodnight.  Sometimes it's the simple things we do for one another that builds stronger relationships.

Gone But Not Forgotten: 12 Trailblazing Women We Lost in 2020

Posted On: January 05, 2021

We lost so many people this past year it feels inconceivable.  I am especially sorry for the loss of these trailblazing women who opened doors, broke barriers, shattered ceilings, paved new pathways for women, and inspired so many to do more in their everyday lives.

The loss of Ruth Bader Ginsburg literally made me cry.  I never had the privilege of meeting her, but she was just so amazing and inspiring and her death came at such a tragic point in our history.  Not only did her time on the Supreme Court change so much for us, but her passing and who has been placed on the bench in her stead may also have an untold impact on us for years to come.

I also feel cheated not only by the loss of these women but for some like Katherine Johnson, the mathematician for NASA 101, whom I never knew about until I saw the movie Hidden Figures.  How horrible is it that this group of black women, who made it possible for the space program to be successful and actually saved men’s lives, were never recognized or had their story told in our school’s history books for decades?  Our education system must not just tell the white man’s history (his story) but needs to embrace all people’s history, minorities of all colors as well as women’s history (her story)!

One of the women listed here, B. Smith, was a restaurateur and a model.  I had the privilege to meet and dine on several occasions in her New York City restaurant which was absolutely amazing.

Remember the women that stepped forward in World War II:  well, we have lost the original “Rosie the Riveter” Rosalind Walter.

I hope you enjoy this article as much as I did and I look forward to hearing about many new women who are trailblazing for the next generation!

Lesbian Baker in Detroit Got Homophobic Cake Order: Why She Made It Anyway

Posted On: August 25, 2020

A customer of a well known black lesbian owned bakery in Detroit attempted to bait the owners into reverse discrimination by requesting a cake online with a homophobic message. The customer, an employee of a Ferndale-based, conservative Catholic organization — a group that broadcasts pro-life, anti-gay, anti-feminist, Islam-fearing, human-caused-climate-change-denying orthodox Catholic, was surprised when the owners not only made the cake, pursuant to their online ordering regular requirements, but attached a note responding with a message of love good wishes and inclusion for all!

DOMA The Defense of Marriage Act And The Right For Same Sex Couples To Marry

Posted On: July 19, 2022

DOMA: the Defense of Marriage Act, was passed by the United States Congress and Senate and made law with the intention to “protect the institution of marriage”.  Protected it from what is the real question! This law was devised by those who intended to specifically define marriage as only between a cisgender heterosexual man and cisgender heterosexual woman. Its purpose is to reserve the protections of marriage to that single class of couples.

The effect of the law permitted individual states to discriminate and prohibit same sex marriages within their state.  It also gave states the power and right to refuse to recognize same sex marriages from other states in which same sex marriage was legalized, recognized and permitted. This severely undermines a longstanding legal principle that all Judgments and Orders from other states must be recognized by any other state in the union and most be given “Full Faith And Credit” in other word full force and effect.

DOMA was determined to be unconstitutional initially by the Supreme Court case of United States v Winsor in 2013. The rights of same sex couples and the extinguishment of much of DOMA was determined in 2015 by the Supreme Court case of Obergefell v Hodges which ultimately determined the rights of same sex couples to legally marry throughout the 50 states.

The fall of DOMA permitted same sex couples to nationally have the benefits that come with legalized marriage, however, it did not retroactively protect couples that may have been “domestic partners” or living together for years and even decades prior to being able to legally get married.

So, what does this really mean and look like?  In most states, as in New York, in a divorce, valuation of marital and separate property of a couple is determined from the date that they were legally married to the date that they commence a divorce action.

What is the impact and what does that mean?  Well, if a couple for example has been together 30 years, prior to being able to legally marry and planned their financial futures accordingly; either deciding to pool retirement or utilizing one partner’s benefits to establish a more secure financial future for both parties at the time of retirement; this planning would be disregarded by the court system.  The court is only permitted to look at assets that existed at the time of the legal marriage and valued as of the date of the commencement of a divorce action.  So, in our example if a couple had in their financial planning decided to put more money in one party’s retirement, with the intention that they would both benefit from it in the future.  At the time of the divorce, that asset would only be considered the property of one party until such time as the date of the legal marriage.  So, all the planning and all the monies that were put aside prior to the date of the legal marriage would NOT be considered marital property by the court and the party who had contributed to the other person’s pension or retirement asset, as a way to plan for the future, would be denied those monies and benefits.

A spouse has no right to retirement assets acquired or complied prior to the date of the legal marriage. Therefore, no matter what careful planning a couple may have chosen for their future, the court will not recognize this planning or the parties’ intensions. The Court will only recognize assets titled (or in the name of the party) at the date of the marriage.  Therefore, investments of 30 years for a joint future will be totally disregarded. For instance, if a couple chose to invest in one person’s retirement, rather than each person’s retirement, knowing that they would both benefit, their plan will be totally disregarded and the person that has no retirement, but was choosing to utilized resources to build a partner/spouse’s retirement could be left with nothing.

Couple Married For 47 Years Die Of COVID At The Same Time

Posted On: December 22, 2020

This is a very touching article, like Romeo and Juliet.  This Michigan couple was married for 47 years and died in the hospital on the same day at the exact same time.  They were 75 and 78 years old, respectively.

They were both no strangers to public service; Pat was a registered nurse for over 35 years at the hospital and Leslie was a veteran of the United States Naval Reserves.

This couple did literally everything together...an incredibly heart-warming story and read.

Who I Am, What I Do & How I Can Help You

Posted On: April 09, 2019

Every so often I take the time to sit down and think about how I can better connect with my colleagues, clients (and potential clients).

The bio on my website is just part of the picture, it’s what I do.

You know I'm a trusted, compassionate and aggressive lawyer who has been practicing law for over 31 years in all types of areas including real estate, litigations, small wills, trusts and estates and collections.  I have represented the LGBT community for many years, and represented parties in litigated divorce as well as being trained for many years in the alternatives to litigation:  collaborative law and mediation of divorce.

Who I am, though, is the other part…the part that helped shape my thinking, my beliefs, and my passions.

From a young age I had a good mouthpiece and a knack for advocating for what was right and what I believed in, so it’s fitting that I found the law.  I absolutely love what I do as an attorney, advocating and working with my clients.  I have always been a people person and a good listener, so counseling is very much who I am at the core.

While the bio on my website will give you a strong idea of my history and experience, I wanted to delve a little deeper and share a few things that you might not know about me...

  • When I was a child, I wanted to be a gym teacher.
  • I’ve had a love of horses from a very young age.
  • I’ve enjoyed many a good game of golf over the years.
  • My original undergraduate degree was in social work.
  • Civil Rights and Civil Liberties were (and continue to be) a passion of mine.
  • I was part of the first gay Student Union for my University and spoke to classes about being gay.
  • In my post college years, at one point, I was part at least 5 different softball teams.
  • A devastating personal experience helped me seek out alternatives to divorce litigation, and since then I have been dedicated and committed to the processes of Mediation and Collaborative Law.
  • I have a great love of good food and good cooking.
  • My strong family traditions were instilled from both sides of my family.

I welcome the opportunity to meet with you.

Thank you.

Concetta
